The heart of a successful business

Erica Reed - The heart of a successful business
December 9, 2025 at 7:30 a.m.

RCS Influencer Erica Reed says the key to success is using technology to eliminate inefficiencies while preserving personal customer service.

Contractors can achieve long-term success by blending traditional business practices with modern technology in a way that strengthens but not replaces the core values of the industry. Craftsmanship, quality control, trust, communication and strong customer relationships remain at the heart of a successful business.

These traditional strengths should be supported by technology that improves efficiency and accuracy, such as digital estimating tools, CRM and project management systems, mobile jobsite apps for crew communication and online invoicing. Technology should also enhance the customer experience through progress photos, clear documentation and streamlined communication. At the same time, data analytics can help contractors make smarter decisions about pricing, job selection, overhead and team performance.

Safety tools like drones, moisture meters and thermal imaging further reduce risk and protect workers. The key is adopting new tools gradually, training teams thoroughly and integrating them into daily operations without overwhelming staff. Ultimately, the contractors who win are those who use technology to eliminate inefficiencies while preserving the personal touch, reliability, honesty and high-quality workmanship that customers have always valued.

Erica Reed is the vice president of Elite Construction Solutions. Read her full bio here.
