Tips for Avoiding the Courtroom as a Roofer

DaVinci How to Stay Out of the Courtroom
July 4, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

By Cayden Wemple.

Listen to Tina and Brett Hall of Joe Hall Roofing breakdown how you can avoid lawsuits.

There’s nothing more inconvenient or unsettling for a roofer than the threat of a lawsuit. Lawsuits can set you back financially and take away valuable time that you could be putting back into your business. On a new episode of Roofing Road Trips, Tina and Brett Hall of Joe Hall Roofing sat down with host, Heidi J. Ellsworth to share some tips to help keep you out of the courtroom.

One of the best ways to avoid lawsuits is by keeping up to date on your code. Brett explained to Heidi, “Everyone should know the International Residential Building Code, that's the easy one. That one stands out and that one kind of stands up tall as the one that you should go to first. It gives reference to manufacturing specifications and codes actually being superior codes to the international code.”

Another way to try and avoid the courtroom is by settling out of court and bringing in a mediator. The courtroom can get very expensive very quickly, so it’s generally in everyone’s best interest to try and settle outside. Brett explained, “Attorneys get expensive... I know mediation's very popular these days. We support mediation. We have that on our own roofing contracts as the method. It does go quicker.”

Tina had some additional ways to stay out of the courtroom and told Heidi, “Brett and I both agree, always know your building codes and know your installation techniques, but beyond that, join your local and state organizations. Go to additional trainings, build a group of mentors and peers that when maybe you see things are spinning a little out of control from your job, you have someone you can call and ask.”
