Building better roofs starts from within

Building better roofs starts from within
July 27, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Why self-development is the next frontier in roofing leadership.

At ServiceCon 2025, amid panels on service growth and operational strategy, a powerful theme emerged: the most important changes in the roofing industry start with the people leading it. This idea took center stage during the live recording of a Roofing Road Trips® podcast episode featuring Greg Hayne of the Hayne Coaching Group, Chad Westbrook of Service Alignment, Cody Kline of Commercialroofer.com and Tracey Donels of Service First Solutions. Podcast host, Heidi J. Ellsworth, led the panel through a conversation focused on leadership, mindset and the personal accountability needed to drive lasting success in the industry.

The conversation focused on the more introspective: how internal growth, mindset and leadership clarity can drive lasting business success. Greg challenged contractors to rethink how they approach progress. “The problem is not, ‘you don't know what to do,’” he said. “The problem is that you’re unwilling to do it or your inability to figure out how to do it. That is a you problem, not a process problem.”

Cody echoed this, noting a key conversation he had with industry peers. He shared, “Everything that happens in your business is the outcome. We need to remember that those outcomes happen from the inputs.” For Cody, measuring and managing the right inputs and staying aligned with customer needs begins with leadership clarity.

But personal development isn’t just philosophical. It has direct implications for business strategy and hiring. Chad noted the importance of aligning team roles to company goals. He explained, “It’s not about hiring someone that you think is good, it's about knowing exactly what that position needs to perform for the business to be able to get the end result.”

This leadership-first approach reframes what it means to grow a roofing business. Culture, clarity and personal discipline aren’t just typical human resources buzzwords; they’re foundational tools.
