5 tips to get the most out of industry events

5 tips to get the most out of industry events
August 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m.

By The Coffee Shops ™.

A little planning before, during and after an event can create marketing, recruiting and business opportunities that last all year.

Attending industry events is a big investment for small businesses. Even just walking the show floor requires an entry fee, food for the duration and usually travel and lodging. In this article by Marco Industries, you can find helpful ideas for how to get the best bang for your buck when attending tradeshows or conferences.

1 – Treat it like a marketing opportunity, not just an event

Don't just show up and collect brochures. Plan how you'll share your experience before, during and after the event. Capture photos and videos from sessions, plan to participate in networking opportunities and consider how you’ll approach vendor interactions.

This is a chance to increase visibility, showcase your expertise and stay connected with customers and prospects long after the event ends.

2 – Put your team front and center

Industry events provide a great opportunity to highlight the people behind your company. Share team insights and behind-the-scenes moments from the event. Featuring employees not only humanizes your brand but also demonstrates company culture, helping attract both customers and future team members.

3 – Focus on learning and sharing knowledge

Events are packed with educational opportunities, new ideas and industry trends. Attend sessions strategically and look for information that can benefit your customers and coworkers. After the event, turn those insights into blog posts, social media content, newsletters or team training discussions to maximize the value of what you learned.

4 – Build relationships, not just contacts

Successful attendees focus on meaningful conversations rather than just collecting business cards. Spend time connecting with peers, manufacturers, suppliers and industry leaders. Strong relationships often lead to future opportunities.

5 – Capture content you can use all year

One of the biggest missed opportunities at industry events is failing to document the experience. Save photos, videos, interviews, customer conversations and key takeaways to use later. A few days at an industry event can generate enough content to support your marketing efforts for months.

That content can be repurposed for:

  • Social media posts
  • Website updates
  • Sales presentations
  • Recruiting campaigns
  • Customer newsletters

Industry events are about much more than attending sessions or walking the trade show floor. With a thoughtful strategy, they can help strengthen relationships, generate new opportunities, support recruiting efforts and provide valuable content and insights that benefit your business throughout the year.
