Virginia Roofer Wins Lottery and Buys New Roof for Woman in Need

RCS - Caught Doing Good
April 12, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

By Lauren White, RCS Reporter.

After surviving six heart attacks, a local woman was faced with a failing roof she couldn’t afford to replace.

A man from Lynchburg, Virginia recently won the Virginia Lottery!  Mike Robertson bought the million-dollar-winning scratcher ticket at a store he frequents, Burley’s Market.  After cashing in his winnings, he decided to share his good fortune with a woman in need.

Mike owns his own roofing company and was called to look at LindaAnn’s leaking roof shortly after he won the lottery.  “LindaAnn DeWillers is in hospice care after having six heart attacks, so doing a major home renovation is out of the question,” ABC13 News reported.  Her first heart attack was in the 1990s, and she’s been having difficulties ever since.

For over five years, LindaAnn’s roof had been leaking and leaving visible damage to her home.  She called Mike’s company asking them to cover her roof in tarps to help prevent further water damage.

“It was in pretty bad shape, it really needed replacing,” Mike shared in his interview with ABC13 News.  Tarps were placed on the roof, but Mike wanted to do more. He contacted Rempfer Roofing and ABC Supply Company to see what could be done for LindaAnn.  Rempfer Roofing donated all of the labor and ABC Supply Co. donated the materials needed to replace the failing roof.  Mike intended to pay for the labor, but the company has yet to send him a bill for the re-roof project.

LindaAnn’s roof was fully replaced in just one day!  And she didn’t have to pay for any part of it. She expressed her gratitude and sense of relief in her interview with ABC13 News saying, “I now feel safe and secure, whereas before I didn’t know if I could stay here...For that reason I am happy to be in my house.”

“Recently I had good luck, so I figured I’d pass it on,” Mike shared with ABC13 News.  The collaboration between Mike, Rempfer Roofing, and ABC Supply Co. provided a woman in need with a new roof that will keep her dry and protected, and allow her to remain in her home.  Their generosity and willingness to give back provided LindaAnn some much needed peace of mind.
