Veteran Wins Free Roof Replacement in Contest

Veteran gets new roof
May 2, 2022 at 6:00 a.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt, RCS Reporter.

After winning the Beacon of Hope contest, this Army combat medic veteran got his roof completely replaced for free.

Alan Dragnett served for 12 years in the Army National Guard as a combat medic. The veteran from Union Dale, Pennsylvania also advocates for suicide prevention and PTSD. Last year, he made the major decision to buy a new home and soon found that it came with a lot of problems, namely with the roof.

When Alan and his family bought the home last April, they were contacted a few months later by their insurance company with some bad news. “We received a letter from the insurance company saying they were going to put it up as non-renewable unless we replaced the roof,” he told Fox56

Alan decided to enter the Beacon of Hope contest from Beacon Building Products, a nationwide contest that helps veterans with their roof troubles. The contest is one of the ways Beacon fulfills its commitment to giving back to local communities and our nation’s veterans. They partner with roofing companies that are veteran-friendly who help them install the new roofs for all the winners. For Alan’s roof, they worked with The Roof Brothers

Michael Romiti of Beacon Building Products spoke with Fox56 about why Beacon holds their yearly contest for veterans. "It's very important because veterans sacrificed so much for our country and this is a way for us to give something back,” he said.

Alan expressed immense gratitude for his blessing of a brand-new roof. “Receiving this new roof is extremely humbling and it's a blessing - we really didn't know how we were going to pay for a new roof being that we just bought the house" he said.
