The role of pipe collars in energy efficiency and moisture control

The role of pipe collars in energy efficiency and moisture control
July 30, 2025 at 3:00 a.m.

By Jenny Yu.

Learn how one small product can make a world of difference.

Wil-Mar Products, Inc., has over 34 years of experience providing quality products and services for roofing and solar contractors in the commercial and residential industries.

The pipe collar, one of Wil-Mar's signature products, is an EPDM rubber collar that slides down a vent pipe to provide a waterproof counterflashing. In sealing a vent pipe firmly to a roof flashing, the pipe collar eliminates the need for wear-prone tape or mastic and prevents costly roof leaks.

How pipe collars contribute to a sealed roof system

The pipe collar is made from a special EPDM rubber compound that meets ASTM D-2000 Standards for hi-low temperature, oil, ozone and sunlight resistance.

“It is warranted to last as long as any of the roofing systems offered today,” according to Wil-Mar. “The pipe collar’s unique design allows it to slide easily down any pipe, (i.e. plastic, copper, galvanized, etc.) but stay firmly attached to the pipe so that it moves when the pipe moves, and the seal is completely waterproof.”

Together with a roof’s underlayment, flashing, covering and drainage, the pipe collar contributes to a continuous barrier that protects a commercial or residential structure.

The pipe collar is a small but mighty tool a contractor can use toward greater energy efficiency.

The energy impact of a leaking roofing system

When people think about sustainability in roofing, their minds often jump to large-scale projects like installing solar panels or green roofs. However, taking a small step like installing pipe collars can prevent energy inefficiency and increase the longevity of a whole roofing system.

Small leaks that could be prevented by pipe collars, when neglected, can balloon into more serious issues such as:

  • Water damage
  • Electrical hazards
  • Compromised insulation
  • Hidden structural issues

In preventing seemingly innocuous leaks with the pipe collar, you can save an entire structure from more severe and expensive damage down the road.

Improperly sealed vent pipes can also allow warm or cool air to escape a property, prompting heating and air conditioning systems to work longer and harder. These energy efficiencies add up, resulting in increased energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Moisture control and indoor air quality

In addition to aiding the energy efficiency of a property, pipe collars can also help with moisture control and indoor air quality. Without the secure sealing a pipe collar provides, leaks around vent pipes can introduce moisture into attics or walls. This moisture, if untreated, can lead to:

  • Mold or mildew growth
  • Wood rot
  • Degraded indoor air quality
  • Health risks

By utilizing pipe collars, you are ensuring that moisture stays out of a structure, protecting the health of the building and the people within it.

Conclusion: Small details with big impacts

While pipe collars may be small, they can play a major role in the whole roof system’s performance. By showcasing their use of the pipe collar to customers, roofing contractors can prove their commitment to the highest quality service and precision, setting their business apart from the rest.
