The Many Benefits of Stone-coated Steel Roofing

Stone-coated steel roofs have been on the rise in popularity recently, and for all the right reasons. They are lightweight, durable and have an array of additional benefits. On a new Read, Listen, Watch Webinar, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with industry experts Mitch Heitsch and Rob Anderson of Westlake Royal Roofing Solutions to discuss some of the many benefits of stone-coated steel roofing.  

One of the benefits of the stone-coated steel roof is its durability and the fact that it is lightweight. Mitch explained, “[Customers] always tell me, "I've always wanted concrete roof tile.’ Well, if you have a shingle roof that's existing, a lot of times the truss system and stuff like that won't support the weight of concrete because it is a heavy product.” 

He continued, “There's benefits in the weight, but if your trusses aren't set up to support that, you really can't [put it up] unless you hire a structural engineer to beef up the truss system. This is an opportunity to give somebody a completely different look than what they were originally thinking of with the added benefit that it's a very lightweight product. And it's a lot more of a durable, long-lasting product as well.” 

Another major benefit is its storm-resistance abilities. Not only are the stone-coated steel roofs fire resistant, but they are also Class 4 hail resistant. The roofs went through some rigorous testing toreceive those ratings too. Rob explained, “The product [has been] shot with ice balls or steel balls drop from 20 feet. Two-inch steel balls drop from 20 feet that don't do damage to the panel, functional damage. So, you get to a point that we have put this product through all kinds of the ringers, so to speak, when it comes to overall performance against every check mark that a homeowner should be looking for in the performance of a roof.”
