Teaming up to Solve a Hail of a Problem in Texas – Stories From the Roof

PMR Roofing and Exceptional® Metals team up to reroof a historical building with hail damage in Del Rio, Texas. 

In a recent Stories From the Roof podcast episode, Megan Ellsworth sits down with Quentan Tobolka, president of PMR Roofing, and Jules Dekovics, national sales manager for Exceptional® Metals to share details about their job on The Texas Historical Commission historical marker. The job was outside of Val Verde County Courthouse in Del Rio, Texas, and was possible thanks to Duro-Last, a sister company of Exceptional Metals.  

PMR Roofing is a roofing contractor in Dallas, Texas that services all across the state and specializes in re-roofing. Quentan has been in the roofing business since 2008 and finds that the more complex, dynamic and the more challenging jobs are the most exciting to him. Just after the COVID-19 pandemic shut the world down, Quentan received a call about providing emergency response in Del Rio after a severe hailstorm had hit the town. 

“Usually when we get a big disaster like this, I like to go down and assess the total loss. They had hail up to [the size of] baseballs, holes through buildings, all of this in March of 2020,” Quentan said. "Val Verde Courthouse was actually one of the projects we did towards the end of this package. We ended up doing something like eight million dollars' worth of work just for the city of Del Rio, Val Verde County, which is located in Del Rio, and also the Del Rio Housing Authority.” 

Jules Dekovics has worked in the roofing industry for over 30 years in different facets, from contractor to distribution to manufacturing. Jules’ main roles within Exceptional Metals include focusing on the growth of their product line, establishing national awareness and creating more exposure for the company. Exceptional® Metals boasts national coverage with five different locations across the U.S. After Quentan and his team reviewed the scene in Del Rio, he reached out to Jules to solve additional challenges that arose. 

“A lot of it was just trying to figure out what was going to be the easiest panel to work with for them on site because these types of projects, you cannot really do in a factory, ship it to a job and expect it to fit the way it's supposed to,” Jules explained. “And being historical work, things aren't always as square as you'd probably like them to be. When you take things apart, you don't know what you're going to find under it. Being able to work with [PMR Roofing] and figure out what was going to work the best and getting that together was a real big piece of this [job].”
