Roofer to roofer: The value of virgin resins

DaVinci - Roofer to roofer - The value of virgin resins
June 17, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

By DaVinci Roofscapes.

Insights from roofers on selling the value of virgin resin to homeowners.

As a roofer, you play a key role in educating your customers every day. From explaining underlayments and energy values to the types of roofing materials available in the marketplace, you’re the teacher and they’re the student.

When it comes to selling composite roofing materials, there’s a lot to teach your customers.

One of the first aspects starts with how the product is made: Either from virgin resin or recycled content. At DaVinci Roofscapes we make our roofing materials from virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers as well as a fire retardant. This gives us a dependable, consistent product that endures beautifully in any climate.

Selling virgin resin content

To give you the best insights possible, we went to some very successful roofers and asked them this one key question: How do you sell the value of virgin resin in DaVinci products to homeowners?

Here are their insights.

Learn from them… so you can teach your customers.

Chris Paulus, cedar roofing specialist with Shake Guys® from Lake Zurich, Illinois

“When I talk to homeowners about DaVinci’s use of virgin resin, I emphasize consistency, durability and long-term value.

Virgin resin means every tile is made from the same high-grade material; no recycled fillers, no surprises. That results in a product that’s more resistant to impact, less prone to fading and far more dimensionally stable over time.

With virgin resin, you know exactly what you’re getting; every tile performs the same way, year after year.

I like to put it this way: ‘This isn’t just a synthetic roof, it’s a high-performance system designed to look great and last for decades without compromise.’ That peace of mind matters to homeowners investing in their home.”

Jason Chase, owner of JnJ Restoration in Evanston, Illinois

“What I usually address is that to make tiles from recycled materials, a binder is needed to bind the material to hold its form. With that, you don’t quite know how it will age. I’ve seen some of these recycled roof materials aging and curling at an unnatural rate. I don’t see that with virgin materials.”

Carlton Kohler, co-founder of Luxe Roofing in Jefferson, GA

“Virgin polymer resins are new, first-use plastics, custom-engineered for product performance. DaVinci uses proprietary engineered virgin polymer blends, which allow them to control molecular structure for maximum durability, flexibility and UV resistance. This also allows them to maintain tight quality control across all batches with minimal variation.

The consistency in formulation helps avoid structural flaws, shrinkage or cracking. The virgin resin allows for sharper detail in the shake/slate/tile molds and cleaner edges. Finally, consistent polymer mix means better fit and finish, leading to a more natural, refined appearance.

Jason Totin, the president/owner of Totin Too, LLC out of Wexford, Pennsylvania

“I have seen/installed synthetic products for close to 30 years. One of the reasons some synthetics failed was due to discoloration. They used a mix of filler product on the inside and added a separate coating/color to the outside. The results in some cases were really bad.

I feel DaVinci solved the two main issues with earlier model synthetics.

  1. They developed a method that stopped curling of slate.
  2. Their virgin resins solved the issue of discoloration.

Andrew Prchal, president of Gunner from Stamford, Connecticut

“We always say with virgin material you know the quality you’re getting and production from factor is able to be better monitored.”
