Planning for Disaster Before it Strikes

RCS Influencer John Kenney says that businesses should always have a plan in place in the off chance they experience a business crisis.

Roofing contractors, like any business, may experience a crisis at some point. Various factors, such as a natural disaster, an economic downturn or a pandemic, can cause a crisis. When a crisis occurs, contractors need access to the right resources to help them navigate the situation. Here are some resources for contractors when they experience a business crisis:

  • Financial resources are critical for contractors to survive and recover in a crisis. These resources can include loans, grants and other forms of financial assistance. Contractors can access financial resources through various sources, including banks, government programs and nonprofit organizations.
  • Contractors can also seek financial assistance from local or state government programs or industry-specific organizations. For example, the Small Business Administration (SBA) offers disaster loans to businesses affected by natural disasters or other crises. These loans can help companies to cover payroll, rent, and utilities.
  • Federal, state and local governments can offer a range of services to help businesses navigate the challenges they face. Government resources can provide contractors with valuable assistance during a crisis. These resources can include disaster relief programs, tax relief and regulatory compliance information.
  • Maintain a positive workplace culture during a crisis. When a crisis occurs, contractors need to prioritize the well-being of their employees and maintain a positive work environment. This can include resources that promote employee wellness, communication and team building. For example, contractors can offer employee assistance programs (EAPs) to provide employees with counseling and other support services. Contractors can also promote communication and team building through virtual meetings, social media and other online platforms.
  • Roofing industry-specific organizations can provide resources and support to contractors during a crisis. These organizations may offer guidance on best practices for crisis management, financial assistance and other resources. Contractors should contact their industry-specific organizations to see what resources are available to them.
  • Insurance companies can provide coverage for damages and losses caused by a crisis. Contractors should review their insurance policies to see what types of coverage they have and are entitled to in the event of a crisis. Insurance companies can also guide you on filing claims and navigating the claims process.
  • Roofing industry-specific consultants can guide and support you during a crisis. These consultants can help contractors develop plans for responding to a crisis and provide guidance on recovery efforts. Contractors should consider working with a consultant to develop a comprehensive crisis management plan.

There are several resources that roofing contractors can turn to when they experience a business crisis. By accessing these resources, contractors can get the help they need to navigate a crisis and position themselves for long-term success. The key is to be prepared by having your plan in place before a disaster strikes.
