Mother Nature out of control

Mother Nature out of control
May 13, 2025 at 12:00 p.m.

By DaVinci Roofscapes.

How these homeowners made it through the summer of hurricanes in their hometown.

It’s almost like Indian Shores, Florida has a huge bullseye on it. That’s how homeowners Hugh Smith and Diana Fuller felt in the summer of 2024 when not one, not two, but THREE hurricanes struck their area in just as many months. Thank goodness they made a smart decision just weeks before the first storm hit to invest in a new a hurricane-resistant DaVinci Multi-Width Slate roof.

“We heard that it was going to be a rough 2024 hurricane season,” says Hugh Smith. “We’ve seen our neighbor’s roof ripped off during a storm and land in the waterway. We didn’t want to go through that scenario, so we immediately started researching roof options.”

The reason they began looking at roof options was because their contractor identified some problems with their existing presidential-grade asphalt shingles. During a routine inspection, the contractor said the roof probably had a year of life left. Smith and Fuller like those odds when considering the bad hurricane forecast.

Excellent timing

Given the joy Mother Nature seems to take in recent years in stirring up trouble, Smith and Fuller decided that durability and wind protection were their top goals in selecting a new roof. After a great deal of research, they determined that the 180-mph wind ratings of DaVinci synthetic products, coupled with the Class 4 impact rating, would provide them with the peace-of-mind they desire.

The couple recognize the roofing selection as an investment in the protection of their waterfront home. They especially appreciate the Lifetime Limited Material Warranty. In addition, the virgin polymer tiles from DaVinci require no maintenance, making their lives easier for their Florida lifestyle.

Here she comes

Within a few weeks of installation of their new DaVinci roof, Mother Nature stopped by for a visit.

On July 12, 2024 the team from FL Specialty Roofing completed the installation of the DaVinci Multi-Width Slate tiles in a Slate Gray color. Less than a month later, on August 4, Hurricane Debby came to town. By now a tropical storm, Debby dumped about 16 inches of rain on the new roof. The result? Not one leak.

Next, on September 24, Hurricane Helene struck Indian Shores as a Category 4 storm. Horrendous winds and slashing rain hit the waterfront home. Again, no roof problems.

When Hurricane Milton was projected to strike their area on October 7 as a Category 5, Hugh and Diana boarded up and evacuated. The powerful storm smashed through with 120 mph winds as a Category 3 hurricane. When the homeowners returned, their first floor was flooded and severely damaged. However, the roof was 100% perfectly intact.

“We didn’t lose a single roof tile or have one leak,” says Hugh. “That’s a tremendous testament to both the strength of the DaVinci product and the talented FL Specialty Roofing crew that installed our roof.”
