Metal roofing growth starts with the right training

Contractors entering metal roofing can build a stronger foundation by understanding the precision, education and support system the trade requires.
Metal roofing continues to present opportunities for contractors looking to expand their offerings, but taking advantage of that demand requires more than adding another roofing option to the sales lineup.
In an episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke with Ray Kimble, general manager of Western States Metal Roofing, about what contractors should understand before making the move into metal. For Ray, one of the biggest distinctions is the level of precision involved. “It’s not that metal roofing is really hard. It’s just that it’s very precise.”
The need for precision extends across the installation process, including panel layout, fastening patterns, thermal movement and substrate flatness. Contractors who already have extensive experience with another roofing system still need to recognize those differences before approaching their first metal project.
Installation knowledge is particularly important as building owners, homeowners and architects pay attention to both the system and the contractor installing it. As Ray explained, “Good panels can’t hide a bad installation.”
That makes training an important part of successfully diversifying into metal. Western States Metal Roofing’s certification program addresses installation while also helping contractors understand the product they are taking to market. Training can include exposed- and concealed-fastened systems, installation resources, specific jobsite conditions and hands-on practice using a training structure.
The company can also review contractors’ previous metal roofing work and conduct job walks, giving installers an opportunity to connect classroom instruction with real-world conditions. Ultimately, Ray encouraged contractors to establish that knowledge before stepping onto a project. His advice is straightforward: “Don’t learn on the roof.”
With the right foundation, contractors can approach metal as a new specialty with a clearer understanding of what successful installation requires.
