Meet your new favorite top and base coat duo!

AlphaGuard® BIO coatings from Tremco are not only durable and high-performance, they’re also sustainable and versatile.

Since Tremco was founded in 1928 by William Treuhaft, the company’s goal has been to provide top-tier, reliable building solutions that address the evolving needs of architects, contractors, facility managers, building owners and more. A great example of how they are still fulfilling this mission almost 100 years later, is the development of the AlphaGuard® BIO top coat and base coat.

Both the top and base coat are two-part, biobased polyurethane roof coatings. This means that they are perfect for new construction, repair projects or restoration systems that involve “fully-reinforced or partially-reinforced applications with a fiberglass mat or polyester reinforcement.”

The AlphaGuard BIO system is classified as a high-solids coating, meaning application results in a thicker, more durable dry film. Despite the higher film build, cure times remain manageable: Skin time of 3–4 hours and recoat in 6–7 hours at 77°F (25°C) / 50% RH and a recoat time of 6-7 hours (same conditions).

AlphaGuard BIO products are also virtually odorless and can be applied on a variety of substrates including BUR and single-ply. This makes them versatile, as they can be used on everything from a school to a hospital with minimal disturbance to the occupants.

On top of the incredible durability and versatility of these products, they are also United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) BioPreferred certified. This certification recognizes products which “reduce our nation's reliance on petroleum, increases the use of renewable agricultural resources and contributes to reducing adverse environmental and health impacts.”

AlphaGuard BIO qualifies for this certification due to the rapidly renewable materials used in the creation of the coating (the top coat is made of 60% biobased material). Furthering the sustainability of the AlphaGuard BIO duo is the reflectivity of the top coat. The AlphaGuard BIO top coat has a “highly reflective surface keeps roof temperature lower than typical gravel, reducing energy usage.”
