Making a Roof Repair Using KARNAK 19 Ultra Rubberized Flashing Cement Caulk

KARNAK Roof Leak Repair
May 16, 2019 at 1:30 p.m.

By Chris Huettig, KARNAK.

Today’s how-to lesson explains the method of using KARNAK 19 Ultra Rubberized Flashing Cement Caulk for wet or dry repair and preventative maintenance on a roof.

KARNAK 19 Ultra Rubberized Flashing Cement Caulk is a great tool to have in your toolkit when performing roof inspections, annual maintenance or emergency repairs.  KARNAK 19 Ultra Caulk is the next generation, asbestos-free, rubberized asphalt caulking cement. Scientifically compounded with a selection of rubber reinforced asphalt, mineral fibers, and refined solvents, it is manufactured to a thick yet pliable consistency for ease of application by caulk gun.

You can either watch the demonstration video or read the instructions below.

In the demonstration, the asphalt roof has a crack along the edge where the metal flashing and asphalt come together. It’s not currently leaking but could become a problem with water penetrating the crack - especially during the wintertime where water can freeze, and expansion and contraction can cause this to open and start leaking.

The tools that we need for this job today are safety glasses and gloves, as always. We'll also need an open cradle caulking gun, and some type of a whisk broom or brush to remove any dirt or dust that's in the crack. Start by cutting the spout of the caulk tube and puncturing the inner foil seal. Place it into the caulking gun and run a quarter-inch bead along the crack.  If you want, take a trowel or spatula and press firmly along the length of the caulk bead to tool onto the surface.

KARNAK Ultra 19 rubberized flashing has a high degree of expansion and contraction, it will keep that area sealed and save a lot of money down the road by preventing a leak before it has a chance to start.

If the roof is already experiencing a leak and/or has ponding water, KARNAK 19 Ultra is the answer. It can be applied to either wet or dry surfaces and it even works under water (you can watch that video here). It’s available in 1-, 3- and 5- gallon pails for larger repairs.
