Inclusive recruitment reshapes roofing workforce

Inclusive recruitment reshapes roofing workforce
July 19, 2025 at 12:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Industry leader highlights the critical role women play in driving innovation and success in roofing.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with industry professionals Kristin Case, co-owner of Hi-Peak Staffing Solutions, and Rae Fistonich of Chinook Building Envelope Services to unpack a critical issue: how inclusive recruitment is reshaping the roofing industry and why it matters now more than ever. “I think it’s important to be inclusive of all people because our industry is multifaceted,” said Rae. “There’s a stigma about roofing. People think it’s dirty, it’s uneducated, but really roofing runs the gamut.” Rae pointed to roles in sales, manufacturing, accounting, even scientific R&D as essential, yet they are often overlooked aspects of the trade.

Rae, who recently took over as chair of the Industry Recruitment Committee for National Women in Roofing (NWIR), explained that inclusivity isn’t just about fairness, it’s a business imperative. “Our company, we run on the three gets: get the work, get the work done and get paid for the work,” she said.

Kristin has also witnessed a sharp rise in demand for diverse candidates. “We’re just growing and it’s awesome. We’re busy as can be,” she said. Her team works nationwide to place talent from foremen to C-suite roles. But she noted a persistent perception gap. “When we have a job posting out there and it’s for a roofing company, women will typically look away,” Kristin admitted. That’s why her team works to ensure job descriptions are “really inclusive,” emphasizing existing female leadership and supportive work cultures.

The conversation touched on the evolving attitudes toward gender in roofing and how smart recruitment strategies are breaking down outdated barriers. Both Kristin and Rae agree that culture is key. “People ask, ‘What’s your company culture like?’” Rae said. “You have to be prepared to answer that. And everything must reflect that diversity.”

The modern roofing industry offers opportunities far beyond the rooftop, but only if companies are intentional about who they invite in. As Rae put it, “You have to educate yourself and stay on top of trends. Otherwise, you’re going to be left behind.”
