If you’re not in the room, you’re missing more than you think

RCS Influencer Melissa Chapman says the contractors who grow, lead and stand out are the ones who stay involved, build relationships and surround themselves with people who care about doing this work at a high level.

Think back to high school for a moment.

You could always tell who was involved and who wasn’t. The kids who joined teams, showed up to events and actually participated just knew more people. They had more going on, more opportunities and more connections. Not because they were better, but because they were around.

It’s not all that different in roofing.

Too many contractors treat association involvement as optional, something they will get to when business slows down or something that has little value. But the ones who consistently show up at the local, state and national level are the ones building real connections, expanding their reach and positioning themselves for long-term growth.

When you participate in roofing associations or attend events like Roofing Day in D.C., you are surrounding yourself with people who care about the same things you do. Safety. Quality workmanship. Doing the job right. Elevating the industry and the way it is perceived by customers, partners and the next generation entering the workforce. That kind of alignment matters.

It also changes the level of conversation you are part of.

Instead of operating in a silo, you are engaging with contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and industry leaders who are thinking bigger. You hear what is coming before it hits your market. You contribute to discussions that influence regulations, workforce development and the future of the trade. You are not just reacting to the industry. You are helping move it forward.

And then there is the opportunity most people miss.

Some of the strongest referral relationships are built outside of roofing-specific groups. When you get involved in organizations like your local chamber of commerce, BOMA, IFMA or real estate investment groups, you are connecting with building owners, property managers and decision-makers long before they need a roof. They get to know you as a person first. That trust carries weight when the time comes.

There is also a ripple effect inside your company.

Getting your team involved, especially women and emerging leaders, gives them exposure beyond their day-to-day role. It builds confidence, communication skills and a stronger sense of belonging in an industry that is continuing to evolve. It shows them they are part of something bigger than just the projects they are working on.

The contractors who grow, lead and stand out are not the ones sitting on the sidelines. They are the ones who stay involved, build relationships and surround themselves with people who care about doing this work at a high level.

So, ask yourself this. If your business were a student, would it be sitting in the back of the room, or would it be the one raising its hand, joining the team and building the kind of connections that create real opportunity?

And if you decided to step in more intentionally, which rooms would matter most for you and who on your team should be there with you?
