How to Start Automating Your Company

By Cass Jacoby.

So you are ready to reap the benefits of automating your business, but you don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, these experts weighed in on how to successfully leverage new technology.

Most businesses are looking for ways to increase productivity and efficiency, which is why technologies like software automation are such gamechangers for roofing companies. If you run a contracting business, by now you are pretty aware of the various ways that automations can make your life easier — freeing up time for you and your employees, making your processes more efficient and helping differentiate yourself within the market. Now the only question is, how do you get started?

Luckily RoofersCoffeeShop® has just the Read Listen Watch™ for you! Learn from the experts, Organic Engagement Manager Sarah DuBois and Communications Manager Jeantiel Livingston from JobNimbus about how you can start using automation to make running your business easier.

Sarah says that the first thing to ask yourself is whether or not you have automation. Chances are, if you are using something digital and it is happening automatically, you have automation. While most of us are primed to think of automation as a huge sci-fi artificial intelligence concept, something as simple as a reoccurring meeting in a calendar is also automation. Sarah suggests that you do an audit of your automations before you start a new process or change things to discover where automations could improve your workflow.

“First, really figure out where you're missing the mark on some things. Where there are bottlenecks or where things often get forgotten. And I would collaborate with your team and then start with something simple and test it out,” says Sarah. “The hardest part I'd say is just trying it and getting started. And then involve your team, ask, get feedback and figure out, ‘Okay, where are we? What needs to be optimized here? What's slow and what do we keep forgetting?’ If it's something that happens three times, you probably should automate it.”

Key to successfully engaging your employees during a change in processes is to discover what can be automated within their day to day. Showing your employees the way technology can make their jobs easier not only makes it easier to have your whole team on board as things change, but is a fantastic way to gauge what kinds of automations make the most sense to start with.

“Automation is just allowing the whole team, the whole business to create a process that they can stick to,” says Jeantiel. “It allows the employees to also trust each other. Sometimes it's hard to work so hard on something and let it go and let another teammate handle their part in it. And with automation, it allows the team to work together.”

In this period of change, where business operations are accelerating and customer service strained, finding solutions that take the weight off of your team while improving customer satisfaction is more relevant than ever.
