From coatings to the complete building envelope

ASC Building Materials’ story begins with coatings, but it doesn’t end there. In a live soundstage interview at the International Roofing Expo (IRE), Gabe Rodriguez talked about a shift across the industry toward broader building envelope solutions and how ASC Building Materials is expanding to support contractor growth. 

“ASC started as a coating manufacturer originally – acrylics and mastics,” Gabe shared. “We were originally called American Standard Coatings.” As contractor needs changed and demand for more integrated solutions increased, the company made a strategic decision to expand beyond its original niche. 

Over the last several years, ASC has steadily grown its product offering to better align with how contractors actually build roofing and waterproofing systems in the field. “About three years ago, we started making APP and some smooth membrane. And last year, we launched our line of self-adhered as well,” Gabe said. 

This expansion means fewer gaps between products, better system compatibility and the ability to source multiple components from a manufacturer who understands how those products are used together. Gabe continued, “At the end of the year, we also launched a brand-new line of sealant – caulking for concrete, windows, doors. We’re trying to cover the whole building envelope.”

The term building envelope has become a common phrase throughout the roofing industry as contractors are increasingly responsible for performance across transitions, penetrations and interfaces, not just roof surfaces. “There’s so many manufacturers that want to be a one-stop shop,” Gabe explained. “And we’re right there.” ASC Building Materials is strategically focused on supporting complete system thinking to help you reduce complexity in your projects while improving performance. 

While their product line continues to expand, Gabe is clear that products alone aren’t the whole story. “Product is product,” he said. “But it’s the customer service that you get at the end of the day that’s going to make you want to come back.”
