Recently, The Coffee Shop’s team members, Megan Ellsworth and Alex Tolle, had the chance to visit Atlanta, Georgia to check out the world’s first museum dedicated to roofing – The Roof Museum! This museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal of raising awareness of the importance of the skilled trades and roofing industry. It was founded by Donavan (Don) Morgan, also known as “Roofs by Don,” who was featured in an episode of Roofing Road Trips®!
Roofing is something that can often be intimidating to homeowners as it is not something they will encounter frequently in their lives. That’s one of the reasons that Donovan created this museum. He shared, “It's important to give homeowners some kind of education on what they're getting on the products, things like that. So, you're adding more value; they're seeing what they're getting. They know what cutting corners look like or what premium materials look like, so in that way they can make the best decision for their home.”
The museum offers homeowners this crucial context in a variety of ways, from educational exhibitions to classes and guided tours. Donovan shared a bit about one of his favorite museum exhibits, the tug test (known as a pull test in the industry). The interactive exhibit allows visitors a hands-on way of testing the strength of roofing fasteners, as roofers would do in the field. He explained, “It started at conferences, seeing some people do the tug test and how much they learned. So, we made this interactive exhibit where they can actually put on the white gloves and feel, see the differences.”
The Roof Museum is not just for homeowners to learn about the industry; it’s a great spot for industry professionals to celebrate their community and trade. Donovan explained, “We have the first roofing hall of fame where we have a lot of people that we're inducting and just making roofing fun and elevated. We’ve got people like TJ McCormack (The World's Greatest Roofer), John Senac (AKA John the Roof Pro from Name That Shingle), Deshaun Bryan, Becca Switzer (Sales Mastery) and Big Time the Best Damn Roofer – All roofing rock stars.”
