As roofing companies work to attract and retain talent, compensation is no longer the only factor influencing career decisions. According to Kristin Case, managing partner of Hi-Peak Staffing, company culture has become one of the strongest differentiators in today's workforce.
Speaking with Megan Ellsworth on a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Kristin shared that conversations about culture are happening more frequently than at any point in her career. “The word culture has just been coming up over and over and over and over, more than it has, I'd say, in the last 10 years I've been doing this in roofing,” Kristin explained.
That shift reflects evolving priorities among job seekers. While pay remains important, candidates are increasingly evaluating leadership, work environments and opportunities for long-term growth before making career moves. “People want to work for leaders that they trust alongside teammates that they enjoy working with and companies that generally are investing in their success,” Kristin said.
For employers, that means company values must be more than words on a website or mission statement. Employees want evidence that an organization's actions match its message.
Kristin pointed to family-oriented companies as an example. If a business promotes itself as family-focused, employees should experience that as flexible scheduling, support and understanding when personal responsibilities arise. “Make sure that you know, when they are what they're looking for in company culture is that you guys are actually executing on what you guys are stating,” she said.
The same principle applies to employee recognition. Celebrating work anniversaries, promotions, project wins and professional development opportunities helps create an environment where employees feel valued. “It makes them go, Ooh, that's a place I wanna work,” Kristin said.
As roofing companies compete for talent, culture has become more than a workplace benefit. It is increasingly shaping how candidates evaluate opportunities and choose where to build their careers.
Ultimately, organizations that invest in leadership, communication and employee growth may find themselves with a significant recruiting advantage.
