Core samples made simple

Core samples made simple

KARNAK repair products make it easy to inspect roofing insulation while keeping systems watertight.

When it comes to evaluating a commercial roofing system, core samples are the gold standard. They give a true cross section of the roof assembly and reveal what the eye can’t see from the surface. With the right process and repair products, contractors can properly inspect a roof without leaving it vulnerable to leaks from the core cut.

Why core samples are important

Core cuts answer the most important questions about a roof’s health:

How to take – and seal – a core sample

KARNAK’s step-by-step method for how to inspect roofing insulation ensures contractors can gather the information they need while keeping the roof watertight:

  1. Cut a hole in the roof system using tools such as a hammer, chisel, or axe.
  2. Remove the material carefully, exposing the insulation below.
  3. Inspect the material. If the insulation shows signs of moisture, that’s a red flag that repairs or replacements may be necessary.
  4. Repack the material back into the opening.
  5. Replace the cap securely.
  6. Repair the location with KARNAK repair products to restore a watertight seal.

Some building owners worry that cutting into the roof will create leaks. When you follow the proper procedures and reseal the core cut with high-quality products, the process is completely safe. In fact, it’s the only way to get the full picture of a roof’s condition without the risk of guessing.
