On this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke with Tracey Donels of Service First Solutions about the role service plays in a roofing contractor’s growth. Drawing on nearly 20 years of experience in commercial roofing, Tracey explained that quality work remains essential, but contractors must also deliver dependable communication, customer care and speed.
Tracey noted that contractors cannot differentiate themselves simply by promising to complete a quality repair because customers already expect competent work from every roofing company. He explained:
“Nowadays, you can't simply go out there and say you're going to do a good repair. No one's going to go and say they do a bad repair. So, it's all about providing a good product with good customer service at a high rate of speed.”
He compared offering roofing services to the Chick-fil-A model: Customers have an immediate problem and expect a reliable solution without unnecessary delays. By consistently resolving smaller repair needs, contractors can become trusted partners when larger roofing decisions arise.
Tracey explained that building owners want a dependable partner who responds quickly, communicates clearly and takes responsibility for resolving the issue.
“They want to know they're going to be taken care of. They want to know that they have a trusted partner that they can communicate with and say, ‘Hey, I have an issue.’ And they're going to get to the resolution of that issue ASAP with the team.”
Meeting that expectation requires defined roles and repeatable systems. Tracey noted that high-performing teams move work through a consistent process rather than expecting one person to handle every responsibility.
Tracey explained that repeated service calls give contractors opportunities to demonstrate reliability and build trust before a customer needs a larger project. He shared:
“The more little problems we solve for our customers, the more they're going to come back. And the more they come back, the more problems they have and the bigger problems they have.”
He added that more than half of his former company’s project revenue during his final two years came directly from existing service clients. Those opportunities were supported by familiarity, trust and a history of solving problems.
A service department can be more than a repair operation. When contractors provide consistent care, clear communication and timely solutions, they create relationships that can support the entire business.
