Live from the CertainTeed Business Builder Workshop at Soldier Field in Chicago, host Karen Edwards caught up with Nate Holmes and Jenny of Statement Roofing to discuss their construction backgrounds, commitment to their community and experience working with CertainTeed.
Nate grew up working for his father’s construction company before eventually finding his own way back into the industry. After 12 years in construction, he launched his own company about three and a half years ago. Describing the foundation of his career and the path that brought him back to the trades, Nate explained, “I worked for my dad when I was a kid. He had a construction company, so growing up, that’s pretty much my background. As I got older and I swore I would never ever do this. And yet I’ve been doing it.”
Jenny also grew up around roofing. Her father and uncle entered the industry together following a hailstorm in Minnesota and her first adult job involved selling exterior construction after a 2006 hailstorm. She has since worked in several areas of the construction trades and found a professional home working alongside Nate. Describing that partnership, Jenny shared, “Nate is someone that I just tremendously respect as a person and a professional.”
CertainTeed has also become an important part of their approach to serving homeowners and developing the business. Nate emphasized that manufacturer support goes beyond the products themselves, explaining, “CertainTeed’s been the number one advocate for me to just step in. Whatever I needed, just a quick phone call, somebody picks up.”
The Business Builder Workshop provided another opportunity to build those industry connections. Nate and Jenny highlighted the value of learning from industry professionals, meeting other contractors and exploring different ways to improve both business operations and the customer experience.
Their focus on relationships also extends into the community. Nate described efforts to support people experiencing homelessness by collecting clothing, toiletries and other essential items and delivering them directly to local camps.
Together, their experiences demonstrate how education, reliable partnerships and community involvement can become meaningful parts of building a construction business.
