Better metal projects through early collaboration

Better metal projects through early collaboration
October 16, 2026 at 7:00 a.m.

By The Coffee Shops®.

Architects, manufacturers and contractors can work together to balance design goals with performance and installation considerations.

Metal is becoming a larger part of architectural conversations as designers look for materials that combine modern aesthetics, durability and long-term value. In an episode of MetalCast™, Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke with Mercedes Harris, architectural marketing manager at Western States Metal Roofing, about the trends architects are exploring and the collaboration needed to turn their concepts into buildable systems.

Mercedes is seeing modern vertical siding, wood-tone metal, matte finishes and textured surfaces used in residential and mixed-use commercial projects. Weathered and patina-style finishes are also attracting attention because they can add character to a design. Panel profiles provide another creative opportunity by introducing contrast, depth and architectural rhythm.

Performance is equally important. Architects are considering energy efficiency, sustainability, longevity, fire classifications, wind uplift and the climate surrounding a project. As Mercedes explained, their questions frequently include, “Is it energy efficient? Is it sustainable? How long is this going to last my client?”

Addressing those questions begins early in the specification process. Western States Metal Roofing works as a technical design partner, helping architects evaluate panel profiles, roof and wall applications, gauge, substrate and coating options. The company also provides samples, CAD details, specifications, drawings and project manuals. “Because we're the manufacturer and we actually manufacture the panels ourselves, we can have really detailed conversations about what's feasible, how certain profiles will perform and how details will translate from drawings to fabrication to installation,” Mercedes said.

Contractors add installation knowledge to that process. When architects, manufacturers and contractors communicate during design and preconstruction, they can align attachment systems, transitions, trim conditions and project documents before work begins.

Mercedes pointed out that this coordination “reduces improv on the field,” minimizes change orders and helps keep schedules on track. By bringing the project team together early, an architectural idea can be refined into a metal system that reflects the design intent and practical realities of fabrication and installation.
