A safer, simpler way to repair modified bitumen

A safer, simpler way to repair modified bitumen
December 25, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

See why contractors are turning to cold-process adhesives like KARNAK 66 for SBS modified system repairs.

Modified bitumen systems are built to last, but even small defects and splits can create a pathway for water and ultimately lead to bigger, more expensive problems. The question is not if a repair should happen, but how to do it efficiently and safely.

The traditional routes: Effective, but not always ideal

For decades, most modified bitumen repairs have fallen into two camps:

1 – Torch-applied repairs: Torching can create a strong bond, but it involves an open flame, hot-work permits, increased fire risk and isn’t allowed on many occupied or sensitive buildings.

2 – Hot-mop or kettle repairs: Hot asphalt also delivers reliable adhesion, but requires kettles, extra manpower, added odor and fume considerations and is often impractical for small, isolated repairs.

Why cold-process repairs are gaining ground

To address these challenges, KARNAK offers KARNAK 66 Modified Bitumen Adhesive, a bituminous, cold-process adhesive sealant designed specifically for SBS modified bitumen membranes. In the video below, the KARNAK team demonstrates how simple a repair can be using a pre-cut patch, a v-notched trowel and the adhesive.

Unlike traditional methods, cold-process repairs:

  • Eliminate torches and kettles entirely
  • Reduce liability and hot-work concerns
  • Offer quick setup and cleanup
  • Are ideal for small splits, maintenance calls and urgent lead response
  • Provide flexibility for brush or trowel application depending on the job
  • Deliver a tough, elastomeric bond that moves with the substrate
  • Comply with VOC regulations
  • Offer excellent water, weather and UV resistance

For many service teams, this product bridges the gap between speed and reliability, allowing you to quickly complete the job when working on occupied buildings, tight deadlines or roofs with restricted hot-work policies.

KARNAK’s demonstration walks you through repairing a split in an SBS modified membrane using 66 Modified Bitumen Adhesive, showing:

  • The material’s consistency and trowel-grade workability
  • How easily it bonds a patch into place
  • How quickly and safely a watertight seal can be achieved

Instead of relying on traditional hot-work methods, cold-applied adhesives like KARNAK 66 offer a safer, cleaner, more efficient solution for everyday modified bitumen repairs.
