Women in Construction Week is Happening Soon!

NWIR Women in Construction Week
February 27, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt, RCS Reporter.

Lift up and highlight the women you know in the construction industry during the upcoming WIC week.

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) has grown a lot since their inception in 1955. What started as a group of 16 women working in the construction industry in Fort Worth, Texas has since grown to a national association with over 115 chapters. This active and growing association has their annual Women in Construction (WIC) week coming up March 6-12.

True to their vision of advocating for the value of women in the industry, WIC week is all about highlighting the impact of women who work construction. Whether it’s builders, tradeswomen or construction professionals,NAWIC is encouraging members to raise awareness of the many opportunities women have in the industry.

Members of NAWIC are already making plans for how they’ll support women in the industry during WIC week. In this LinkedIn post, members state that they are creating video highlights, scheduling networking events, identifying volunteering opportunities and more!

According to Heidi J. Ellsworth, president of RoofersCoffeeShop® and a founder of National Women in Roofing (NWIR), “Close to 2000 women are members of National Women in Roofing and many more actively attend events. But for every woman, the next step is to engage with the larger construction industry. NAWIC offers that next step for networking and education.”

Women working in construction numbers 1.5 percent of the entire U.S. workforce in 2018.  It is an ongoing goal of the construction industry to increase the percentage of women in all trades and positions in construction as it has been in roofing.

There are several ways to get involved including planning a WIC event, joining a local NAWIC chapter, recognizing the women in your company and learning about the importance of women joining the construction industry.
