Sustainable buildings reshape Mexico’s construction sector

Energy efficiency, environmental certification and high-performance design are helping projects in Mexico reduce their environmental impact. 

Mexico’s construction sector is increasingly turning to sustainable design as developers respond to climate change, resource constraints and the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. In 2025, sustainable buildings demonstrated how energy efficiency, responsible material selection and occupant well-being can be incorporated into projects ranging from skyscrapers to corporate campuses. 

Sustainable buildings are designed to minimize the consumption of energy, water and materials while reducing their carbon footprint and improving quality of life for occupants. In Mexico, these strategies also address challenges created by accelerated urbanization and growing pressure on natural resources. 

Mexico City has become a focal point for this approach. Its density has encouraged the development of projects that prioritize energy efficiency, water conservation and occupant comfort. Torre Reforma is one example, incorporating natural lighting, a facade designed to improve thermal efficiency and strategies intended to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. 

The Iberdrola Tower also reflects the shift toward more responsible building design. According to an article by Leaf, the project integrates renewable energy and efficient systems while emphasizing reduced energy consumption throughout the building’s useful life. 

Environmental certification is another important part of the movement. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) evaluates factors including energy efficiency, indoor air quality, responsible resource use and building operations. Projects are also beginning to align with approaches such as the Living Building Challenge, which considers environmental regeneration, responsible materials and community impact. 

Across these projects, energy efficiency remains a central objective. Intelligent building systems, solar energy, natural ventilation, high-performance facades and automation can help reduce consumption and operating costs while improving thermal and lighting comfort. 

As Mexico continues developing more resilient and efficient buildings, sustainability is increasingly being treated as an integral part of how projects are designed, constructed and operated.
