Black Friday Gas Giveaway

RCS - Caught Doing Good
December 10, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

By Lauren White, RCS Reporter.

Roofing company in Idaho pays it forward to those in need.

Instead of opening their doors early and cutting their prices, Signature Roofing decided to spend Black Friday giving back to their community.  It was a festive day complete with Christmas music, candy canes, complimentary coffee and hot chocolate, and free gas.  For two years now, the Idaho-based company has been filling up gas tanks for single parents.

“We just want to let others know that we’re out here and we care, we care about our community.” Koki Gonzalez, sales and marketing manager for Signature Roofing told KTVB.

Employees danced and waved “Free Gas” signs while volunteers ushered people into Paul’s Service Center.  According to KTVB, “Most of the people who turned in had some variation of the same question: Is this real?  What’s the catch?” There was no catch though.

Signature Roofing’s owner, Joel Cano shared in his interview with KTVB, “We always say ‘people first,’ and that’s what we’re about.”  Coming from a family of migrant workers, money was tight when Joel was growing up. He was shown a lot of kindness throughout those years though.  He tells KTVB, “If we didn’t have enough money to play sports, I could name a dozen families that would help us play, and got us shoes...I’m entrenched in the community, I love it.”

This gas giveaway is a way to show his appreciation for that and to continue to pay it forward.  Last year alone the company paid for approximately 1,500 gallons of gas. “Single parents that are needing just a little hand up on a day where everybody is spending some money, we’d like to give something back to them,” Koki explained

Signature Roofing found a way to turn Black Friday into a giving holiday.  Single parents got a helping hand from the generosity of Joel, Koki, and the rest of the Signature Roofing family.  Joel commented, “We might go broke today, but we’ll have a lot of fun doing it.”
