Pinpoint Parameters and Mitigate Risk in Welding Membranes

Leister MetalCast with Dave
August 29, 2023 at 6:00 a.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

See how this leading technology can help you monitor every second of the welding process and get ahead in this ever-evolving industry.

Dave Nordentoft of Leister sits down with Heidi J. Ellsworth in season five, episode 30 of Roofing Road Trips, to discuss the benefits of Leister Quality System (LQS) technology, a new technology for improving heat welding. While Leister specializes in thermoplastics and hot air technology across various industries globally, Dave has made his career in the roofing industry. In his role, he manages their distribution network, from education and training to product management and industry relations. During this episode, Dave and Heidi discuss the improvements LQS technology provides in welding thermoplastic roof membranes.

LQS presents a unique opportunity to track the quality and the safety of welding in the industry. As Dave explains, “[the] heat welding process is not an exact science. There's art and science to the whole thing. So through education and training operators get to utilize our equipment and learn how to use our equipment, work with the different material manufacturers... and get us sort of dialed in with the right balance and mix of temperature, speed and welding pressure.”

What’s challenging for contractors is that each project is unique, and so dialing in these welding parameters takes time to ensure their weld looks good before production begins. LQS helps reduce the amount of time and testing taking place because the parameters can be programmed into the machine ahead of time. Then, if something’s off during the process, “there’s going to be a visible flashing red display and an audible alarm on the machine that would tell the operator, hey, something’s happening here that’s taking us potentially outside of our welding window.” Not only does this improve the quality of the work in the moment, but the data gathered from this technology acts as a safeguard if issues arise down the road.

When safety checks are performed at the end of the day, the GPS capability allows the monitored welding assistant to pinpoint exact areas that might require additional work and the data can be archived and shared in the future.
