Owens Family Receives New Roof

RCS Owens Family Receives New Roof
June 29, 2019 at 6:00 a.m.

By Lauren White.

Roofing companies work together to donate a new roof on a Habitat for Humanity home in Indianapolis.

Eager to have a home of her own and having lived with her two children in her grandmother’s home, Ms. Owens was ready for a change.  In an interview with Habitat for Humanity, Ms. Owens explained, “I still cannot afford to provide them with a home of their own where they are not required to share a bedroom with me.”

Working at Advance Auto Parts, Ms. Owens has earned a living and provided for her family without assistance thus far.  However, she expressed to Habitat for Humanity, “...it seems like the more I try to better our lives the further back it puts me...I recently received a $0.70 raise and now I make too much money for the Head Start program my son was attending and now he has been removed from the program.”  In addition to other expenses, Ms. Owens worried about paying for childcare, which set her further behind from achieving her dream of owning a home.

Ms. Owens is grateful for Habitat for Humanity and for the opportunity to become a homeowner.  The qualifications for applying to have a Habitat home are that the homeowner needs to demonstrate a need for a safe home, partners with Habitat throughout the process, and then pays an affordable mortgage.

The family saved nearly $10,000 with the generous donation of a new roof on their Habitat home in Indianapolis.  Beacon Roofing Supply partnered with Cochran Exteriors and Owens Corning Roofing to supply and install the roof for the Owens family.

Ross Cochran, owner of Cochran Roofing stated to Fox 59, “It’s really nice to be out here and spend some time outside of the office with our staff.  But it also is a really really neat feeling that we’re helping someone out in the community that’s in need.”

Ms. Owens shared what homeownership means to her in an interview with Habitat for Humanity, “Homeownership will mean that we finally have somewhere to call home.  Where my children can grow up in the same house and make memories.”

Do you know of someone in the industry who is ‘doing good deeds’ in their community? Help us catch them at it. Send news and information to info@rooferscoffeeshop.com.
