Offering Health Insurance Can Be Costly, but it Creates Satisfied Employees

RCS Influencer Rudy Gutierrez says that one of the key benefits to offering medical insurance is the lower turnover rate.

Our company is located in the state of California, where everyone is required to have medical insurance either through an employer or from the state program. As an employer, Shell Roofing Solutions Group offers medical insurance to our employees. In order to do this, we contracted with a local insurance broker that handles medical coverage. Our team speaks directly to our broker regarding their medical benefits and our individual employee needs. Our human resources department handles all of the necessary documentation and addresses the specific needs of each of our team members.

We have also added a “Cost Coverage” benefits to the coverage program for our part time and seasonal team members. Shell Roofing Solutions will pay their monthly premium if they choose to use the state sponsored program. This cost coverage benefit has been great for our people and it keeps our seasonal team members coming back during our peak season.

Small businesses in California often find it difficult to offer medical benefits to their employees. In most cases, the small business owner is not able to offer coverage.  Over the past few years, changes to federal rules and state requirements have made it even harder for some small businesses to pay for such benefits.

Our experience is that the upfront cost is tough, however, the benefit of having satisfied team members pays for the cost through increase productivity and company representation. Our team members are happy, healthy and motivated to stay with us. One of the key benefits that we have seen is our low turnover rate. Most of our team has been with us for more than five years. We attribute that our company culture and benefits package.

Rudy Gutierrez is president and CEO of Shell Roofing Solutions. See his full bio here.
