Meet Tim Thomas – This Week’s Winner of General Coatings Giveaway

General Coatings Meet Tim Thomas
May 4, 2020 at 6:00 a.m.

By Karen L. Edwards, RCS Editor.

General Coatings is giving away one optical comparator each week to a lucky winner.

At RCS, we love to meet members of our online community. Just as no two roofs are the same, you could say that applies to our friends at RoofersCoffeeShop®. No matter who I meet, everyone has a unique story about what they do and how they got to be in the roofing industry.

When I called Tim’s cell phone, he was out in the field, in the middle of conducting an environmental survey at a University in California. Tim works for T. Brooks & Associates, a full-service environmental and roof consulting firm that focuses on asbestos, lead, indoor air quality, re-roof design and quality assurance observation. Tim is a Registered Roof Observer (RRO) and says that the optical comparator will come in handy as he does warranty inspections for coating manufacturers including General Coatings.

We talked about Tim’s path into roofing and like many, it was not something that he was looking for, but it turned into a great opportunity for him. “I went to school for Industrial maintenance and technology and after graduation was looking for a job,” said Tim. “I knew that I didn’t want it to be nights. I was told about a position at an environmental company looking for an asbestos tech and thought it sounded interesting, so I put my name into the running, and I got the job.”

Tim shared that after two years, he was ready for a change and gave his resume to the owner of the company where he works now. The owner told Tim that he did have a two-year project that he could hire him for, but it was night work. Tim took the position and at the end of the two years a position opened for a full-time day job if he wanted to learn roofing.

“I read a lot of NRCA manuals and RCI manuals and started doing CAD drawings. I eventually got my RRO certification through IIBEC,” said Tim.

When asked what he likes most about the roofing side of the business, he shared, “I love being able to go out, do the roof inspections and troubleshoot the different issues. The investigation side is interesting. It’s enjoyable to be able to see the whole project through from start to finish.”

Tim says that he also enjoys the information he receives from RCS through the Week-in-Review e-newsletter and through all the social media posts that he sees online.

Now, it’s your chance to win! Visit General Coatings’ RCS directory to learn more and enter the giveaway.
