Healthcare Hero Wins New Roof

Companies collaborate to provide a deserving mother of four, working three jobs, with a brand new roof.

A healthcare worker in Tri-Cities, Washington is the winner of a free roof thanks to a local roofing company’s giveaway.  Josh Shupe, the CEO of Black Diamond Roofing, partnered with GAF and MacArthur Company to give a new roof to a healthcare worker in the Tri-Cities community.  “As a company, we wanted to give back to the community during this corona craziness,” Josh shared in his interview with KATU 2.  

This giveaway was inspired by his brother’s act of kindness.  The owner of a coffee shop in the Tri-Cities, Josh’s brother “asked customers to sponsor cups of coffee for healthcare workers as a way to fuel them through their long hours,” reported KATU 2.

Having friends in the medical field and hearing all of their stories, Josh knew there was something he could do to give back to the men and women who are on the front lines of the pandemic.  “We realize these people are giving of themselves tirelessly and selflessly,” Josh noted.  

He started talking with GAF, his manufacturer, and MacArthur Company, his roofing supply vendor about partnering with him for this giveaway.  GAF tweeted, “It warms our heart to see healthcare heroes getting support from their community!  Black Diamond Roofing and Construction is partnering with MacArthur Company and GAF to donate labor and materials for a free roof giveaway to a local healthcare worker.”  The mayor of Benton City, Linda Lehman, took care of the necessary permit and paid for it out of her own pocket.

Three weeks after the giveaway was announced, Josh had received 130 nominations for deserving healthcare heroes in need of a new roof.  These nominations came from the Tri-Cities, Seattle, Spokane, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota and even New York City.  

After careful consideration, Josh revealed that Veronica Huerta is the lucky winner!  A Benton City resident, Veronica is a mother of four and works three jobs, two of which are at local hospitals in Richland and Prosser.  Veronica has been in need of a new roof for a while now, but has been unable to get one due to her busy schedule.  “We want to say thank you, Veronica, for all you do for everyone in our community,” Josh shared.

Veronica’s new roof will include all labor and materials at no cost to her.  A 50-year material warranty and 25-year labor warranty will also be included.  “It will be a top-of-the-line roof and top-of-the-line warranty that you get on the market right now,” explained Josh.

“A lot of people have stepped up to [make] this happen, and without all of your love and support we wouldn’t have been able to do this,” Josh comments.  The partnership between Black Diamond Roofing, GAF and MacArthur Company helped a local, hard-working healthcare professional.  Just like he was inspired by his brother, Josh hopes his giveaway will inspire others to give back as well.
