Local team members from GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, recently joined forces with Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity to support the organization’s annual Women Build event. Alongside other volunteers and community partners, they helped Habitat staff construct a home for Raquel, a local kindergarten teacher and single mother of two, in the Haven Place neighborhood of Castle Hayne.
More than two dozen employees from GAF’s Burgaw facility worked on various construction tasks, including wall raising, and donated roofing materials for the project. Women Build is an annual initiative that brings together women and supporters to raise funds and help construct affordable homes for female-led families. No construction experience is required, and Habitat staff provide guidance on site.
“As a team, we love partnering with Habitat to come out here and support our community,” said Rossy Gibson, senior human resources business partner at GAF. “We’ve participated in Women Build for over five years, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute alongside Habitat and local volunteers to help families achieve safe, affordable homeownership.”
GAF’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity is part of GAF’s social impact initiative, GAF Community Matters, which is focused on making a positive difference as neighbors and partners in the community by leveraging roofing expertise, resources and products to help build resilient communities.
About Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity
Founded in 1987 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Cape Fear Habitat has served nearly 500 hard-working families in Pender, Duplin and New Hanover Counties. With staff and the involvement of thousands of volunteers, Cape Fear Habitat builds 16 homes each year and provides a Critical Home Repair Program that helps preserve the value of owner-occupied homes. The affiliate also manages ReStore locations in Wilmington that sell new and gently used household goods, furniture and remodeling supplies that support the mission of the organization and help reduce waste in landfills. A new Deconstruction Program provides skilled teams to remove cabinets, countertops and appliances prior to a remodel or demolition. These items are then sold in ReStores at affordable prices.
