Do a Professional Job With Tubos Vent Pipe Extensions

Tubos pipes

By TUBOS.

Extending rooftop pipes is critical during many re-roofing projects.

Rooftop pipes are required by national code as well as Florida code to be a certain height over the surface of the roof, usually eight inches. The best way to remain code compliant is with the Tubos prefabricated pipe extensions.

While some, as in the photo, think that couplings and PVC pipes might do the trick, there are several critical problems with this approach. First, you can’t buy PVC couplings that fit onto iron pipes that will convert to fit onto a PVC pipe. Second, when using no-hub couplings with hose clamps on both ends, you also have to use a much larger lead or thermoplastic boot to fit over the no-hub to try to keep the penetraton from leaking. Third, if the original vent pipes are PVC, which is unlikley, you stll have to use a no-hub coupling and larger, more expensive boot.

In addition, the extensions in the photo are all highly likely to leak. Water running down the inside and outside of the extension can and will get into the assembly at the point where the PVC extension meets the old vent stack. This cannont happen with Tubos units, which are manufactured for use with standard diameter vent pipes, and made with an integral six-inch long splice sleeve insert that fits properly down the vent stack, and a lip that sits on top of the old stack. Any water running down the inside will flow harmlessly into the plumbing system. Once properly flashed with lead or a boot, water running down the outide cannot seep into the roofing assembly. In fact, Tubos has had zero warranty/leak issues in nearly 15 years!

In additon, unlike in the photo, Tubos vent stacks remain perfectly perpendicular to the roof, and would be cut to the proper height for a more pleasing asthetic look. If a taller extension is required, Tubos units can be stacked to reqch the required height. The extensions shown are likely to be blown or knocked over by the wind, or by people walking on the roof. And, what building owner would allow this forest of PVC pipes on his/her roof? None that we know of!

So next time you’re dealing with a rooftop vent extension, have pride in your work and reach for a Tubos Vent Pipe Extension. Each unit is 28 inches long, and can be cut to provide two extensions. They are guaranteed not to leak, and can be installed in minutes without having to send your crew to the hardware store for no-hubs. More importantly, they are the only product in the roofing industry specifically made for this application.
