Like any great relationship, COMMUNICATION is key. We like to think of our distributors/suppliers as a member of our team. Get to know the distributor you are working with, engage your sales representative in finding out all that they can do for you. Understand their processes, whether it is their process on delivering materials, payment terms, rebates, etc.
Once you have the approval to move forward with your project, work your plan. After you issue your purchase order to the supplier and they have confirmed pricing and delivery, be sure that your communication goes beyond the phone call. Complete a follow up email that revisits the plan for your purchase order. The process of emailing these details not only ensures you have not forgotten anything, but now reminds your sales representative what your expectation is.
Suppliers/distributors are here to help you, your success is their success. They can help you beyond just delivering supplies. They can assist with material options, manufacturer contacts, and much more. Use your supplier as a resource - they have expertise and can be an asset if you chose to go beyond just placing an order.
Don’t be shy, when it comes to engaging your representative(s), there are no dumb questions and there is no harm in asking for additional services, if they cannot do it they will tell you. If you don’t ask you will not know. Engage, communicate and continued success!
