Calgary department store gets new look

A Canadian roofing contractor teams up with IKO to deliver a custom commercial roofing system under specific requirements and tight deadlines. 

When popular U.S. retailer Nordstrom opened its Calgary Chinook Centre location in Calgary, Canada, in fall 2014, the project demanded precision, speed and reliability. That’s why they turned to IKO Industries.  

The high-end retailer’s new store replaced a former Sears that had been gutted down before being rebuilt to Nordstrom’s exacting specifications. Peddie Roofing & Waterproofing Ltd. of Calgary managed the roofing installation under tight timelines. “New HVAC equipment with special air handling technology was installed on the rooftop, making the roof installation a bit tricky,” said Ashley Peddie, owner and general manager of Peddie Roofing & Waterproofing Ltd. “The project was on an accelerated schedule for all trades, as Nordstrom had a firm deadline with mall owner, The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited. It also was a challenge to integrate two different roof deck systems — one concrete and one steel.” 

To meet these challenges, the building owner selected an IKO Torchflex™ Heat Welded Roofing System, known for its durability and proven performance in demanding commercial settings. The system included several IKO products, such as the Torchflex TP-250-Cap Heat Welded Cap Sheet, Torchflex TP-180-FF-Base, Torchflex TF-95-SF Vapour Barrier, IKOTherm™ Tapered Insulation, IKO Millennium Adhesive, IKO Protectoboard™ and IKO Armourbond™ Flash. 

The 6,968-square-meter (75,000-square-foot) roofing project started in June 2013 and was completed by October 2013. The completed project came with the IKO 10-year Diamond Shield Limited Materials Warranty, reflecting the manufacturer’s confidence in its long-term performance. 

The Nordstrom Chinook Centre project demonstrated not only the importance of using a trusted roofing system on a large commercial build but also the ability of contractors and product manufacturers to collaborate under strict timelines.
