A new recruiting playbook for roofing contractors

Hi-Peak - A new recruiting playbook for roofing contractors pr photo

Contractors can compete for skilled workers by strengthening talent pipelines, expanding training and investing in retention.

Roofing contractors continue to face a difficult hiring environment, full of challenges such as labor shortages, cautious workforce movement and competition for experienced employees, which shape recruiting decisions. With workers less likely to change employers, companies can no longer depend on traditional job postings alone to fill critical field and leadership positions.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey reported 7.4 million job openings nationwide in June 2026, compared with 5.3 million hires. Quits and layoffs remained relatively unchanged, reflecting what experts have described as a “low-hire, low-fire” labor market. To address this, Hi-Peak Staffing has developed proven strategies to help roofing companies attract and retain talent.

Successful employers are responding by building relationships with potential employees before openings arise. Skills-based hiring can broaden the candidate pool by identifying people with transferable experience from construction, manufacturing, military service or related trades, then providing the roofing-specific training they need.

Career development also matters. Clearly communicating pathways from entry-level positions into leadership, estimating, project management or operations can help contractors attract workers who want long-term opportunities. Mobile-friendly applications, faster hiring processes and social media recruiting can further improve the experience for candidates.

Recruiting, however, is only part of the solution. Competitive wages remain important, but workplace culture, safety, training, benefits, communication and work-life balance can influence whether employees stay. Retaining experienced workers reduces recruiting and onboarding expenses while preserving valuable institutional knowledge.

By partnering with trade schools, apprenticeship programs, workforce organizations and industry associations, contractors can create more sustainable talent pipelines. The strongest workforce strategy combines proactive recruiting with professional development and a workplace where employees can build lasting careers.
