Retirement can be an ugly word. Going from not enough hours in the day to how the heck am I going to fill this day.
For me I had all the warnings it was coming. My Hearing had made my most used word "What" and days were coming faster on my back going down.
The very first thing on my plans were to be debt free.
I take things to an extreme so I define it as ZERO debt.
My home has an attached Studio Apartment. It is all paid off. I rent the Studio out and give free Electric and Cable. The money I get from the rental pays for my Condo Maintanance, Electric, Cable, taxes so I pay nothing out of pocket at months end.
My car is paid for. I elected for a RagTop that will not go out of style in my lifetime.
I have a series of Debit Cards (no checks). If there is no money in the accounts I can't go into debt with them as no one will honor the plastic alone. I did keep one credit card, it is not really for Credit it is for security on Rental Cars when I travel. After that use I instantly go on the pute and slide real money in so zero balance.
I have a series of income, have not applied for Social Security. That income could come to a halt at a blink of an eye so I don't count on it.
7 Months before retirement I started thinking about what I could do a means to make money and take up retirement time without being stuck to not have my deserved hours any time I wanted.
I knew Roofing, Urethanes, Polyureas better than most but that would be a conflict with my old company. The only other thing I knew as well as anyone on the Planet was the game of Pool (Billiards). In the Past I had made a lot of Custom Cues but you are talking a money pit and being stuck with deadlines etc. I thought it over and there was an item that all Pool Players used and bought new every few months so I decided to give it a go.
Back to the 7 months. I have always believed you need 6 months on anything to give it a fair trial but I believe this of anything including advertising. If you can't afford 6 months on something, don't start. That is like my number one rule from biz plan to doing.
I look at my money two ways. My money tucked aside and present cash flow. If I have to go into money tucked the earth is going to move so everything is about money coming in.
As always, or for the last couple of decades I don't believe in Trade Shows (Unless they are in Vegas and I need a write off) I don't believe in the Newspaper or Ma Bell so I believe in the WWW.
I am open 24/7 and never touch the phone, I can't hear on it so I call it my Texter. I get paid up front on line.
I guess my only regret is waiting to long on my back. I cannot Play Pool for an hour nor Golf but thank god I can swim.
Hope this thread helps someone as there are not a lot of big boy retirement plans for those on the roof. :)
