I have a friend with an asbestos roof who wants to know if its possible to put perlons and metal over his roof without tearing off. I know it may be possible, but will he get a good roof with it? Its Indiana so codes are not as much of an issue as in some other states. Pro, cons?

We screw 1x4 battens down on 3 foot centers and go right over it with exposed fastener systems all the time, no problem here. You will be told here to take it off, but you dont need to unless theres a bunch of rotten wood.As long as you screw the battens down and make sure you hit the truss"s it"s fine.I have a package waiting to be installed over abestos"s right now.One thing i tell people is if you take it off and put shingles on expect your cooling cost to rise.
