Finished this skylight job up this morning. The existing skylight was deck mounted. ALL plastic even the flashing. The top was a dual plexi glass bubble dome.
He said they let it leak for a "Loooooong" time because it only dripped into the bath tub below. :huh:
The previous installers tarred it down to the bare wood, which is what is holding it onto the roof on the non-rotten side. I had to use a pry bar and hammer to get all the tar off the wood.
I replaced it with a Velux 2246 curb mounted and also used the Velux flashing kit to get the 10 yr. no leak guarantee.
Normally I would not run the new wood vertically like that but this one had existing rafters ran horizontally as well as vertically around the skylight.
Me too woody but believe it or not that didn't cause the leak in this case. I think it was due to the way they put the tar on the left side at the top.
We were standing in the bathroom under the skylight when I was doing the estimate and at the very end just before we were about to walk out he asked me what the smell is?
