I recently lost a project to another roofer on a large commercial project, just shy of half million dollars. Not because my price was too high, not because they felt the other contractor was better qualified, or that the other contractor was providing a better roof... She had an insurance settlement and the other contractor was not only going to cover her deductible, but also promised that she would make a profit. Since I was unwilling to commit insurance fraud I lost the project... What say you?

First, congratulations on doing the right thing. Second, any property owner who has fallen for this crap is either naive or too stupid and corrupt in their own selves. If the CONtractor screws them over in any way, the property owner will have no recourse in any civilized manner. She will not be able to sue the CONtractor because it will always claim that it was never paid in full and could not finish the job. And, under the doctrine of unclean hands, she is complicit in the scam and deserves no relief. Besides that, with the money involved in the deal, she is just crazy.
Once I explain the consequences of a CONtractor "covering deductibles" in any way to a property owner, their true character is revealed.
