Why a Career in Roofing is Great for Veterans

TAMKO Career in Roofing for Veterans
November 8, 2021 at 6:00 a.m.

By Colin Sheehan, RCS Reporter.

RoofersCoffeeShop® and TAMKO Building Products team up to honor military veterans who found a new home in roofing.

The initiative to hear from veterans about their journeys into the roofing industry was created by TAMKO and RoofersCoffeeShop® in November 2020, and continues today with military veterans still able to submit their stories. Several veteran story submissions were received from roofing contractor companies across the U.S. and attest to why a career in roofing is great for veterans.

“Roofing allows me to utilize my project management and operations skills to ensure customer satisfaction,” said Kevin Eubanks, area director at Birdcreek Roofing. Kevin served in the military for 20 years. “After transitioning to the private industry, the things I missed the most were the camaraderie, brotherhood and teamwork.”

Supporting veterans returning home from service is vital to a veteran's long-term success in the civilian world. Many veterans return without the experience of applying or interviewing for a job and often feel out of place or misunderstood at their place of work.

RoofersCoffeeShop, TAMKO and many other organizations in the roofing industry are incredibly interested in bringing more veterans into roofing. With a current industry-wide worker shortage, there really couldn’t be a better time to get more veterans involved in roofing.

“Roofing has given me the opportunity to serve others and work with crews that take pride in a job well done. It also offers me more flexibility than previous, traditional jobs because I have the ability to bid and select the type of jobs I want to accept. I enjoy the hard work and outdoor life of roofing and construction and take great satisfaction in seeing a project to completion and helping homeowners protect their investment,” Eubanks said.

TAMKO, one of the largest roofing manufacturers in the country, has a long history of supporting veterans in a variety of ways, including hiring them for leadership positions within the company. TAMKO had previously joined the 100,000 Jobs Mission, a nonprofit that helps veterans and military personnel locate civilian jobs.

“TAMKO so honors and values the character and skills military veterans possess that veterans make up approximately 15 percent of TAMKO’s total workforce nationwide, and an even larger percentage of our leadership team,” says TAMKO President and CEO David Humphreys.

TAMKO also supports veterans through generous financial and product donations to wounded servicemembers and nonprofit veterans’ organizations.

Veterans in the roofing industry can still submit their story to TAMKO or apply for a job. RoofersCoffeeShop’s Classified Ads are also a great place to launch a financially rewarding and life-long career in roofing.
