Project profile: Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Project profile: Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Protecting a hospital estate from water intrusion with a liquid-applied roof.

When Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spotted leaks within the estates department’s building, concerns were that the roof had reached its end of its functional life and had started to let in water. This water intrusion was causing a variety of issues, including that it was saturating the building's insulation which caused the loss of valuable heat implicating occupants within.

To address the problem, a roof survey report was produced by Tremco, which recommended an overlay of the existing 600m2 roof to restore its waterproofing. The scaffolding was installed around the building. It required a specialised configuration on the left side to cover vertical rooflights to mitigate the risk of workers falling through.

As it was a hospital estate, with 24/7 operations to consider, safety parameters were critical. The roof had one point of entry and designated area for supplies. AAC Waterproofing, a Trusted Partner of Tremco, had to prepare the surface, including the removal of loose chippings, and then mechanically fixing boarding.

TremVap AVCL was installed to the now smooth surface, followed by the liquid-applied roof solution. The roof included a number of penetrations to detail, but as the system is self-determining this made the installation simple and efficient.

AlphaGuard PUMA Liquid Applied Flat Roofing System was chosen for the refurbishment works. This system is fast-curing in low and high temperatures, certified with Broof(t4) classification, and comes with a 25-year warranty. It was applied seamlessly to roof detailing. Project was completed within the desired time frame of three weeks to reduce construction disruption to the healthcare estate.

Reflecting on the project, the Deputy Head of Estates shared some thoughts:

We are pleased with the completed roof works by AAC Waterproofing and the quick and efficient system supplied and warranted by Tremco. Having a warranty in place gives us peace of mind that the roof will remain watertight, which, in turn, will mitigate the associated risks with water ingress for the building and the occupants below.
