Investing in the environment, people and communities

During state-of-the-industry remarks, Owens Corning Roofing President Gunner Smith offered perspective on market momentum and how Owens Corning is leading initiatives to address customers’ emerging needs. He noted that extreme weather events, stringent environmental regulations and consumers’ interest in sustainable building materials are some factors spearheading the company’s investments in innovation. Progress on Owens Corning’s goal to divert two million tons of shingles per year from landfills by 2030 continues. Research and development efforts stemming from a shingle recycling pilot launched in December 2022 have led to an early-stage prototype shingle made with recycled content.

Findings from recent homeowner research commissioned by Owens Corning Roofing show that consumers want to divert materials from landfills and recycle building materials. Other investments include the launch of SolarProtect™ a panel agnostic program that incorporates leading products with a limited warrantied system and comprehensive training.

Remarking on investments in people, Smith shared enrichments to the Owens Corning University learning platform. Recent enhancements include expanded content, more reporting capabilities, and new estimation and lead management services available through Business Solutions Providers.

The conference concluded by spotlighting the spirit of service that lies at the heart of the roofing community. Owens Corning’s commitment to serving the community ranges from large scale Owens Corning Foundation initiatives such as the Roof Deployment Project, Habitat for Humanity and Gary Sinise Foundation to grassroots service projects including the Blessings in a Backpack project. Contractors at the event teamed up to pack 6,000 lunches for Blessings in a Backpack, a non-profit that provides nutritious food to school-age children who may struggle with food insecurity over the weekend. “The theme of this year’s conference – ‘Lead with Purpose’ – reflects how these contractors approach their businesses, their teams and their communities,” said Schneider. “We are honored to work alongside these leaders in helping to protect America’s roofs and families.”
