Malarkey Roofing Products®, the leader in sustainable, performance roofing shingles and a member of Amrize Building Envelope, has donated its 500th roof to Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH).
Dale Rushing, President: “It always makes me very proud to see a freshly installed Malarkey roof, of course, but this one — our 500th with the Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity — is especially heartwarming because of our team’s connection to the cause.”
Jay Kreft, Vice President, Manufacturing: “We have worked together with Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity since our Oklahoma City manufacturing plant opened in 2012. Members of our team here have volunteered their own time to frame walls and help with construction at building sites. In the plant, we have worked together to provide high-performance, sustainable roofing products for all 500 Habitat homes and many more roofs across Oklahoma and the country.”
Ann Felton Gilliland, Chair/CEO, COHFH: “We couldn’t ask for more dedicated partners than Malarkey Roofing Products. This event is special to everyone because Malarkey Roofing Products sponsored the home build, helped build the Habitat house and it marks the 500th roof covered by the company’s Class 4 hail-resistant shingles — all donated by the company as in-kind donations to Habitat.”
The 500th roof features 30 squares of Malarkey Vista® shingles in the Weathered Wood Plus color blend. Since 2018, Malarkey has donated roughly 275 (of the 500) roofs to include shingles with NEX ® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt. In a region prone to storms with high winds, the rubberized asphalt technology delivers industry-leading all-weather resilience. NEX® asphalt rubberizes shingles, delivering enhanced strength, flexibility (bend) and elasticity (recovery), so shingles ‘bend, don’t break’ in high winds. Malarkey shingles include wind warranties up to 130 mph. Additionally, Malarkey’s shingles are rated Class 3 and 4 (the highest ratings possible) for impact by UL. These shingles often qualify for insurance discounts.
NEX® asphalt utilizes upcycled plastic and rubber material polymers in addition to synthetic polymers. The same shingles also boast 3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules to help improve local air quality. At this scale, the Eco-Offset of these donations (at roughly 30 squares per roof) equates to:
“Having this home means the world to me,” said new homeowner Julie Q., who is now seven years sober after previous struggles with substance abuse and homelessness. “If you had told me I was purchasing my very own brand new home seven years later, I would have told you that you are crazy! I never thought something like this would be possible,” she added.
“It just goes to show you that hard work and strong faith pay off. This wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for nonprofits like Habitat that look beyond my past mistakes and look at the person I am now. I am truly grateful,” said Julie.
In 2023, Malarkey and Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity met the milestone of completing the installation of the 400th Malarkey roof. With an additional 100 homes and roofs built in just two years, the need for affordable housing in Central Oklahoma and nationally continues to increase. The construction of Malarkey’s manufacturing plant in Franklin, Indiana, aims to meet the demand for high-performance roofing shingles on new housing in the Midwest and neighboring regions.
