LRWA drives competence, professionalism and industry change in latest association update

LRWA drives competence, professionalism and industry change in latest association update
March 31, 2026 at 12:00 a.m.

By Heidi J. Ellsworth.

The Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association continues to advance competence across the U.K. roofing industry.

RoofersCoffeeShop.uk was proud to attend the recent LRWA awards ceremony and industry update, witnessing firsthand the momentum, innovation and leadership coming from the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA). As the voice of liquid membranes in the U.K., LRWA continues to bring together manufacturers, contractors and suppliers to advance best practices, education and technical excellence across the industry. LRWA continually shares updates on their website, helping the U.K. stay ahead of industry challenges.

LRWA announced a newly outlined competence framework for liquid applied membranes demonstrates a structured pathway for professionals at every level. From intermediate skills such as proposing waterproofing systems to advanced capabilities like design, condition assessment and product variation sign off, the framework aligns closely with real world applications including roofs, balconies, car parks and podiums. This structured approach reflects the growing complexity of modern waterproofing systems and the need for professionals to not only install but assess, design and validate solutions with confidence.

A major highlight from the presentation was the emphasis on individual competence and professional recognition. Through collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), a globally recognized professional organization that supports construction management professionals through education, training, accreditation and chartered status, LRWA is supporting a new programme designed to help experienced professionals achieve chartered status. This initiative signals a significant shift for the industry, elevating it alongside other recognized construction professions. By providing a clear pathway to professional accreditation, LRWA is helping liquid applied professionals demonstrate expertise, credibility and long-term career progression.

Training remains a cornerstone of this effort. LRWA continues to support qualifications, hands on learning and continuing professional development to ensure the workforce evolves alongside changing technologies and standards. The association is also aligning with broader industry initiatives such as the BSI Built Environment Competence Hub, reinforcing that liquid applied membranes play a critical role within the wider construction ecosystem focused on safety, compliance and performance.

The update also addressed the need to close long-standing gaps in qualifications. By working with professional organizations and industry partners, LRWA is helping create clearer career pathways that recognize liquid applied systems as a skilled, knowledge driven profession. This effort supports attracting new talent while also retaining experienced professionals who are looking for advancement and recognition.

Industry challenges were also part of the conversation, particularly around changes to CITB funding and grants. With demand for training continuing to rise, adjustments to funding structures could impact how companies invest in workforce development. LRWA’s leadership in communicating these changes ensures members are informed and better prepared to adapt.

Beyond technical initiatives, LRWA is investing in its future through marketing, branding and people. The introduction of Caitlin Blackburn as the new marketing lead, along with a refreshed brand identity, highlights a forward-thinking association focused on engagement, communication and growth. This evolution builds on a strong legacy, with the association continuing to adapt to meet the needs of an expanding liquid applied roofing and waterproofing market. The presentation also celebrated industry excellence, recognizing award winners and reinforcing the importance of quality workmanship, innovation and professionalism across the sector.

From competence frameworks and chartered pathways to advocacy and training, LRWA is setting a clear direction for the future of liquid applied roofing. For contractors, manufacturers and consultants alike, the message is clear. The industry is evolving and those who invest in skills, standards and professional development will lead the way.

RoofersCoffeeShop.uk is proud to report on the continued growth and forward-thinking initiatives of LRWA and the U.K. market. For more information, to get involved or to stay up to date on LRWA initiatives, visit www.lrwa.org.uk
