How to Find a Roofing Contractor After a Storm Hits

DaVinci Podcast finding a roofing contractor
August 15, 2022 at 6:00 a.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt.

Here’s why you should stay wary of storm chasers and find a reputable contractor to fix your storm-damaged roof.

Storm season is here and all across the country, people are seeing roof damage from rain and hailstorms. Because of the damage, you are likely looking for a reliable contractor to help . You might have even been approached by a contractor following the  storm, but here’s why you should be cautious about these contractors, oftentimes known as “storm chasers.”

In a recent podcast, Mark McMillan of Horn Brothers Roofing told us all about the phenomenon of storm chasers and why homeowners should be wary of them. These are contractors who follow storms in different parts of the country and perform roofing jobs in those areas. Once the job is done, they leave your area to wherever the next storm may hit.

While it might be convenient to have them fix your roof in a short amount of time, there can be a lot of risk involved in allowing them to do the work. Mike Vaughn from DaVinci Roofscapes recommends hiring a local contractor because “they're not jumping on a plane, (saying) let me do your roof as fast as I can, and then leaving. Because if issues do come up, they're not there to fix them.”

Mark and Mike both highly recommend you find a reputable contractor in your area to repair your storm-damaged roof. The first step they encourage you to take is to contact your insurance company who can usually give you a few references for quality contractors that live where you do. You can also see if there is a roofing association where you live and find a contractor through them.

“That’s a great resource, because you know the roofers have already been vetted because they're members of an association that holds them to certain standards,” Mark says.

Listen to the entire podcast to learn more about finding the right contractor to fix your storm-damaged roof.
