Building stronger businesses through shared experience

Contractors share how this industry event is helping them address growth challenges, strengthen leadership and learn from peers.
Growth can introduce a new set of challenges for contractors, from maintaining accountability to developing leaders who can take a business to its next stage. At Home Service Freedom (HSF), contractors are gathering to discuss those challenges, learn strategies from other business leaders and build relationships with peers who understand what it takes to grow a home services company.
For Justin Giordano, director at JB West, those challenges included expanding beyond one location, creating greater accountability and developing the company's leadership team. Based in Michigan City, Indiana and serving Chicagoland, JB West handles roofing, siding, gutters and other exterior work. Justin had been listening to Tommy Mello's podcast for years and said it provided actionable steps that helped improve the business before he attended the event.
As JB West looked toward expansion through satellite locations, Justin wanted strategies that could support that growth without allowing the company or its people to hit a ceiling. He identified systems, standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists and leadership development as areas where lessons from HSF could help. Describing another important part of the experience, Justin shared, “You can learn anything from anybody. You might be a $100 million company and you can learn some type of strategy from a $4 million company or $2 million company. You never know who you're going to find here.”
That exchange of knowledge is also attracting contractors who are earlier in their HSF journey. Kirill Mazurenko of KVN Construction in Portland, Oregon, attended for the first time as his roofing, siding and windows company works toward its growth goals. Explaining what he hoped to gain from the experience, Kirill said, “I'm here today to learn a little bit more, network, see what freedom is about. It's my first time, but so far I've been loving it.”
Jessica Vine of Construction Unlimited, which primarily focuses on roofing, siding and windows in Central Florida, as a first-time attendee found value in both the educational opportunities and the people surrounding them. Describing the atmosphere, Jessica shared, “The culture of the community is really solid. You can tell that everybody knows their stuff, but they also are very humble and down to earth.”
For Justin, the potential business impact extends beyond what one person takes home from an event. Bringing leadership members into these learning environments can help the company continue developing its people while pursuing its next stage of growth. The relationships formed there also give contractors opportunities to exchange strategies with peers in other markets who understand many of the same business challenges.
